Researcher Focus Advanced Materials

Researcher Focus Advanced Materials Researcher Focus Advanced Materials Researcher Focus Advanced Materialshochschulprofessor Shiren Wang, Director of the Nanomanufacturing and Nanomaterials Laboratory at Texas TechResearcher Focus Advanced Materials Interview conducted by Paul Glanville In a nutshell tell us about your research... focused on nanomaterial processing to apply nanomaterials for the energy applications. How does your results compare with standard supercapacitors right now? Generally the supercapacitors has a high-powered density. Thats pretty good. This is an issue in the market, so we try to use the nano wire as an electrode. As a result, we found out what this kind of nanomaterial can do to significantly improve the high-powered density.Help me imagine what kinds of technologies would use a super capacitor? The most prominent one we hope to use it in the future is the electric powered car. What sorts of issues do you run into with the fabrication of these nanomaterials? Using nanomanufacturing techniques we assemble the nanostructures individually and then to scale. Is that a pretty difficult process to achieve in the lab? Its currently pretty simple. What are some of the ways that you verify that, visually or otherwise? We use microscopes to look at the hierarchical structure. We can see that there is a one dimension in a wire, and a two dimension nanomaterial structure. You probably have quite a few students working with you on this research. How did they come to learn about your research, and I imagine theyre very excited about it? Yes. In the beginning, they are motivated by the application, because the supercapacitor has really big potential application. Like a cell phone. Cheaper iPhones that they use I think maybe have about two and a half days of life, thats a problem. So they are motivated by the potential application, and then they come to learn the fabrication process. Now your research is inherently tied between the fields of mechanical en gineering and electronics engineering. How do you and your students cross both disciplines? I think its just going to be such a hybrid. Im calling that industrial engineering, but mostly a form of manufacturing. Our students, including myself, represent manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, and sometimes material engineering. For my students that want to work here on this topic I suggest they take a class in different departments, in a different area. The purpose is to try to learn specific knowledge for this kind of nanomanufacturing for energy applications. When you were a younger researcher back in your graduate school days how did you find out about this area of research, and how did you know you were interested in energy applications? I checked the job market to see how many job openings were in this kind of field. I understood, the energy issue is pretty important. When you read the newspapers or watch TV, energy is a big challenge around the world. So I think, may be if you work in this area youll get more opportunities for your career, because this is kind of an important question to everybody. We have to drive cars, so how can we reduce the oil at the point of consumption, how do you reduce the dependence and the fuel. Maybe potentially we do can develop a good solution. What youre saying is that looking at societal problems first. Then you see job opportunities, then you focus your research in that area. Yes. Because everybody is looking for a job, so we look at society issues. In the ASME magazine, look at the job ads, youll see how many opportunities go in this direction. So thats most important motivation for us to work on.How do you think your students can be better prepared for the advanced manufacturing industry? They need to learn some basic material processes and how to combine that knowledge in ways that targets an application.Do you give them opportunities to be creative, working in teams? Yes. Theyve created work plans, provided ideas, and executed their projects. I provide some suggestions, to give us a better solution maybe. We work together as a team. One of the other things that ASME focuses on in plus-rechnen to energy is the global workforce. Are there ways with you and your research, have you worked across countries, or worked across other sorts of boundaries using electronic tools? Currently we have not explored this. Were trying to collaborate with the international peers, however, we have some kind of IP issues with the University.Do you find that your students/researchers have to become fluent in IP terms and learning intellectual property law? Yes. Before they can join a project they get training from the University and the foundation, to understand the IP property issues, and not to distribute the information without permission. We have to be careful with IP issues because its related to some kind of economic benefit. What are some ways, you think, your students that are completing their progra ms, could be ready to be engineers in industry? They have to gain the manufacturing knowledge, learn how to find the problem, and how to solve the problem in the real world. In your current research are you working with industry at all? We have some collaboration with the 3M Company. They bring the problem to us and say well see how it can happen, how they can solve the problem. Thats directly very useful for research.Your students are getting early exposure to industrial RD. Yes, exactly. They understand the research is useful. Its not just a published paper. What are some differences for engineers to learn of academic RD versus industry RD? In Academia, generally people are following some very basic fundamental issues. There is a lot of false applications. For the industry, the work is driven by a specific application issue. Whats the challenge of the application in the real world? And then we try to combined the academic and the industry together, because that means, how do you s ay, is mostly is an application inspired researcher, so if theres any problem with the application then we go back to the fundamental issues. And then with the fundamental understanding the issue was the solution for the application. This is what we call a useful application inspired researcher.Tell me about how you began to get involved with ASME? What things have you initially got out of being an ASME member? The ASME is very good as a society, because I work in manufacturing and I get more experience and more networking with other peers in the industry.Beyond laptops and electric cars and smart phones, are there other areas where these nanomaterials can go? They can also be applied to the medical industry and tissue engineering. This is a medical manufacturing. And is your lab capable of covering all those areas? So far, not yet. We tried to collaborate with the medical center, and some experts in that field. Well see how we can apply our knowledge to sort of problems in the medic al issues. We are looking for inspiration. Is there anything else youd like to say to early career engineers? Work harder for the course study, and then try to think independently and bridge the course learning with the future career opportunities. Then maybe theyre more excited for learning.Professor Shiren Wang has published papers on The ASME Digital Collection, including the following from the 2013 ASME Congress Proceedings (IMECE2013) Fabrication of Graphene Reinforced Aluminum Composite by Semi-Solid Processing

How to Handle Anonymous Job Postings

How to Handle Anonymous Job PostingsHow to Handle Anonymous Job Postings6After what feels like a super long job search (and perhaps with not much to show for it), you finally come across a job posting that is perfect for you. Not only do you have all of the necessary qualifications for the position, but it seems like a job that you could grow in for years to come. The only caveat the company (or person) chose to list the job as an anonymous job posting. As a job seeker, youre bound to come across anonymous job postings every now and then. But does that mean you should ditch the job posting and keep on searching? Not necessarily.Heres how to handle an anonymous job posting.Understand why the posting is anonymous. Job postings can be anonymous for a variety of reasons- and not all of them are nefarious. Here are just a fewThey dont want their competitors to know theyre hiring. Some employers post anonymously because they dont want their competitors or the media to know theyre hiring. Rec ruiters who are hired to recruit for companies post anonymously because they dont want job seekers contacting the company directly- they want everyone to apply through them. Its a well-known brand.Lets say youre looking for virtual admin work- and Kim Kardashian is hiring. Imagine the millions of people who would apply for the position simply because of who she is. Thats why a potential employer would post anonymously- to ensure that they dont receive a deluge of job applications simply because of a brand name. They want to make sure that they receive quality applications from qualified applicants, and being anonymous is one way to achieve that. Its a scam. Its true that anonymous job postings and job scams can go hand-in-hand. And some scammers use anonymous job postings to trick job seekers into applying to scam jobs. But if you know the signs of a job scam, you can safely apply for a position without risking getting scammed.Make sure the posting gives other details.Anonymous job pos tings should still be able to give you a good amount of detail about the jobs responsibilities and parameters. Anonymous job postings that offer few details about the job should be handled cautiously by job seekers because thats often a sign of a scam.Do your research. The easiest way to track down the company behind an anonymous job posting is to do a search for a piece of the job description. Use a sentence in the description that is very particular to that job- not something generic that would appear in fruchtwein job listings. Then, do a Google search for that phrase or sentence, with quotes around it. If the posting appears anywhere else on the web, itll come up in the search results and it might contain the companys information. Now that you know the potential reasons why an employer might post a job description anonymously, its up to you to determine if youre actually willing to apply for the job. This is where job seekers need to weigh the pros and cons of taking the time and energy to apply for the position.Consider Your Next MoveIf youre tempted to put on your Sherlock hat and start hunting for clues as to what the company or brand might be, be careful. While you shouldnt be discouraged from interacting with the actual poster behind the anonymous job posting, it can be construed by the employer in both a positive- and a negative- light. On the one hand, a company may find your efforts to unmask the job posting to be creative. They might view your research skills (and deductive reasoning) as a positive characteristic, or a sign that youll go the extra mile to get a job done.On the other hand, if a company is trying to remain anonymous in their hiring but is found out by a job seeker, they may see it as an overreach. They might view you as too aggressive and overstepping your boundaries as a job seeker. They might even go so far as to disregard your application entirely.Ultimately, your job search is your own and yours to handle how you see fit. If you se e a job position that you really, truly want but its anonymous, take the time to assess whether its a) a real job and b) if you want to apply for it. You never know, it might become the job of your dreams.Readers, have you applied for (or shied away from) anonymous job postings? Let us know in the comments section below

4 Reasons Face-to-Face Communication Still Matters

4 Reasons Face-to-Face Communication Still Matters 4 Reasons Face-to-Face Communication Still Matters It may seem on the surface like the marketing communityhas leftthe notion of offline, in-person relationships in the dust, but in fact, the hyperconnectivity of ur current day has thrown the need for face-to-face marketing into sharp relief. As mora and more marketers turn to digital channels, it grows increasingly difficult for each marketer to get their message heard. The noise out there is deafening.I set out to research just why face-to-face marketing is so important today. The benefits of face-to-face marketing are more difficult to quantify than the digital approach (online, everything can be measured), but I was able to distill my findings down to four key areas nonverbal communication, social identity theory, empathy, and Dunbars number. Lets take a deeper look.Notethatmuch of the information contained in this post will apply to recruiters, too. After all we always say that recruiters can learn a lot from marketers.1. Nonverbal CommunicationResearch shows thatbody languageis often more important in revealing what people want than the actual words they say.For example, if someone says Yeah, right in person, you can immediately gauge whether they are being sarcastic or agreeing with you by paying attention to their tone of voice and body language. If someone types Yeah, right online, the subtleties of the expression are lost, which can lead the recipient down a rabbit hole of uncertainty.Face-to-face communication also enables marketers to leverage nonverbal cuesfortheir own advantage.By nonverbal cues, I dont mean using Jedi mind tricks to hide droids, or any of those creepy seem more authoritative with these three nonverbal cues sales techniques. What I mean is that research shows that in-person communication makes it easier to bond, leading to stronger relationships and strong relationships are a must for recruiters and marketers alike.2. Social Iden tity TheoryHumans are more comfortable aroundpeople with whom we can identify, and the groups of people we identify with help us interact with the world.Social Identity Theorybreaksour social interactionsdown into three stages categorization, identification, and social comparison.Putting people into categories helps us understand how to interact with them. How confusing would it be to travel if you couldnt distinguish between the flight attendants, gate attendants, pilots, and passengers?Once we sort everyone into categories, we place ourselves into one of those groups andadopt that groups identity. If youthink of yourself as a frequent traveler, youll identify with other frequent travelers and adopt their practices goodbye shoes with laces and checked baggage The more you identify with a category, the more your self-esteem is tied to group membership. Finally, there is the social comparison stage. Once your self-esteem is tied up in a group, that group needs to compare favorably to other groups. With your sleek carry-on bag and your business-classline-jumping privileges, you view yourself as superior to (or at least distinct from) the airport masses. So, what does this have to do with marketing? Spending time with people enables you to establish that you are part of the saatkorn group, whatever that group may be. Business/brand guru Seth Godin refers to these groups astribes What people really want is the ability to connect to each other, not to companies, writes Godin.Tribe-building is much more effective offline. It gives you the opportunity to form authentic connections with people and convince them (subtly or otherwise) that they are part of your group. And once you identify as part of the same group, your fellow group members will go out of their ways to make you look great to others (because it reflects positively back on them as well).A great example of how this works in the marketing world is theYelp Elite Squad. These people get special badges on their Yelp profiles andareinvited to private, real-world events. The more Yelpers hang out together and get to do insider-y things, the more theyll talk about the places they go and the more theyll promote Yelp. Yelp strengthened its community by creating a real-world, offline tribe.3. EmpathyEmpathy is one of the most important components of friendship, but for humans,it is difficult to feel empathy for strangers. From an evolutionary perspective, this makes sense. You dont know what a stranger is going to do, so you get stressed out. If youre stressed out, you arent going to have strong feelings if something bad happens to that person, because youll be too busy making sure nothing bad happens to yourself. This can create a challenge for brands and marketers as they try to foster connectionsbetweenstrangers. The good news is that it doesnt take much to transition from a stranger into friend, at least in terms of producing an emotional, empathetic response. One studyfrom McGill University f ound that playing the video game Rock Band with a stranger for 15 minutes is enough to reduce social stress and overcome the hurdle of unfamiliarity. If you want to get your influencers sharing your news, content, or the love they have for your products, you need tooverride theirstranger-danger responses. Once they consider you a friend, they are more likely to be excited by your news, to understand what motivates you, and to share your triumphs. Meeting them face-to-face even if its just for 15 minutes can make all the difference.4. Dunbars NumberDunbars number is the theoretical limit to the number of people with whom you are able to sustain meaningful social relationships. Your closest allies represent a group of around 5-10 people with whom you are in regular contact, while you can maintain lets get a beer-type relationships with about150 people. The people in your closest allies group shape the way you think and provide a major support network, while the people in the wider ci rcle are your network amplifiers. One of the effects of social media is that we now think it is possible to maintain relationship with hundreds, thousands, even millions of people. However, quality matters more than quantity. People in your Dunbar circle representsomeof your greatest assets. They will go out of their way to help you, and you will go out of your way to help them. They also have their own networks of allies and amplifiers that they can connect you to, and those personal introductions are going to be far more effective than cold calling or spray-and-pray emailing could ever be.Getting the most out of your network requires expending effort to build and maintainstrongrelationships. By putting time aside each week to meet with people on the fringes of your network, you can bring them back into the fold. High-quality connections, which are far more fulfilling and valuable than weak ties, require face-to-face communication to cultivate.-absatzwirtschaft gets increasingly dig ital every year, but that doesnt mean offline interaction is losing any of its power. In fact, your commitment to building real-world relationships with your customers and professional network could help you stand apart. So put down your phone, step away from your computer, and carve out time for some good old fashioned face-to-face communication.

Manage Candidates

Manage Candidates Manage Candidates Manage Candidates Managing your candidates can be challenging. Luckily, we have many actions you can take on candidates to keep your focus on getting the job filled. Forward Resume If you come across an interesting resume for a colleagues requisition, using the  forward resume action is an efficient way  of sending the information directly to his/her inbox. Send Messages Have you ever searched the resume database and found a perfect candidate for a specific position? Be proactive and send the candidate a message about the job opportunity. Add a Note A note captures your thoughts and activities (phone calls, interviews, etc.) related to this resume. If viewable company-wide, this can be a great tool to ensure that your colleagues know the history of a resume before a candidate is engaged. Copy or Move a Candidate When a candidate applies for a job ad, you can copy the candidate from the job folder into a different folder allowing you to keep track of the candidates who have applied for the job. Block a CandidateIf a resume that is not a good match for a position you are sourcing keeps appearing in your list of results, you can block that resume to make sure you bypass it if it comes up in the future. Managing Folders Folders can help you organize your candidates throughout the hiring cycle. Read on to find out how you can easily add, remove, share and manage your folders. Update Status Update the status to keep track of a candidate’s progress through the hiring cycle. This provides a quick and easy way to know exactly where a candidate stands with a particular position. It can also be very helpful if a colleague is unavailable and you need to follow up with his/her candidates. Rate a Candidate Capture your assessment of the candidate for future reference and compare them to other candidates. Back to top »

3 Reasons Why Good Job Search Advice Is Hard to Find

3 Reasons Why Good Job Search Advice Is Hard to Find 3 Reasons Why Good Job Search Advice Is Hard to Find If you took everything you read on LinkedIn and tried to apply it to your job search in real-life, some hiring managers and companies would think something is wrong with you. Yes, it seems the best job search advice is really hard to find. We explain 3 reasons why for job seekers who feel like they are going nowhere. 3. The best advice out there costs money to receive Social media is a wonderful thing for it connects everyone around the world. LinkedIn is easily the best social platform for connecting with those who may be hiring. You will also find plenty of people who offer loads of free advice. The problem with the free advice is that it often represents the advice of someone who desires: To change something they personally believe is unfair. To get a person to pay for services. So, here you have free advice that represents “what people want to see”, but then “the really helpful advice” is something you will pay for. Is that a bad thing? No, but if you are searching everywhere only for free advice, you will see lots of “ideals” more than “facts”. 2. Local job markets always differ in hiring practices and business cultures Hiring practices across the 50 United States of America have local, state, and federal laws that impact the hiring practices of a company. Federal laws obviously apply to all states (Ex: The EEOC). However, when it comes to state and local hiring practices, things can change. For example, in several cities and states around the USA, it is illegal to ask a job candidate about his or her salary history. This is not yet a federal law. Additionally, people in different job markets have different attitudes and beliefs for what makes a person a “perfect hire”. So, if you are trying to work in New York City or San Francisco, and choose to get job search advice from someone outside these major cities, you may not be as well-prepared as the local job candidate who gets advice from within the local market. Some cities are also synonymous with particular job industries, which makes it more important to find local advice from within the job market. For example, Silicon Valley, CA (Tech), NYC (Financial Services), Detroit (Automotive), or Los Angeles (Media). The job advice offered by people in these cities may sound foreign to those working around the US. 1. The demand for great advice greatly outweighs the supply of poor advice This is a problem. When it is advice that everyone needs a job in today’s economy, the easiest thing to do is start a website and claim to be an expert. When you Google the term “job search advice”, you see about 267,000,000 results. Advice is offered by websites looking to make money by charging to apply for jobs. Most of the advice is outdated and that includes results found on page 1. Saturation of bad advice may explain why finding good job advice is so difficult. But it is also difficult to find because statistics show that 88% of people only trust the online content of friends. Therefore, much of the hard work in finding good advice requires building a network of smart peers involved in helping people find jobs every day on LinkedIn. Knowing how to message them is a great help, too.

How Travel Can Benefit Your Career - The Muse

How Travel Can Benefit Your Career - The Muse How Travel Can Benefit Your Career I remember the first time I left the United States. I was about eight years old, visiting family in El Paso, Texas. During the trip, we traveled to nearby Juarez, Mexico, to visit the market. Everything about the market was different from any previous shopping experience I’d ever had. It was an open-air market with a dirt floor, and it was packed to the brim with booths. Vendors negotiated their prices, and children peddled wares. I saw goods for sale that were new to me, like a Mexican soft drink I’d never heard of or ever tasted. It gave me a new appreciation for- and curiosity about- other cultures. I spent a lot of time thinking about that trip and the many things I saw and experienced that were different from my everyday life. That trip is a significant reason why, to this day, I have an itch to travel and an interest in other cultures. In the work I do now on a college campus, I see students return from study abroad trips with similar wonder in their eyes. It’s amazing to witness the impact that a change in environment can make in a person’s life and career. Students come back with a greater understanding of the intricacies of conducting business abroad, which makes them more competitive when applying to companies that do international work. They bring new perspectives and ideas to their careers and see opportunities they may not have seen otherwise. Even if you’re not a student, travel can significantly benefit your career- here’s how. 1. It Might Open Doors You Aren’t Expecting Consider Scott Harrison, who actually paid to work with a medical mission team in West Africa when he grew tired of his (very successful) career in club promotions. His experience left him bursting with passion to improve lives in the impoverished areas he visited. Today, he’s the founder and CEO of charity: water, a highly visible and highly successful organization that provides access to clean water all over the world. But that may not have happened if Harrison hadn’t set foot on that ship bound for Liberia. Leaving your comfort zone can provide inspiration, awareness, and ideas you wouldn’t likely consider if you continued following the same routine in the same place, day after day. Not every person who travels abroad will come home and found a wildly successful organization, of course. But you may think of new ways to approach old problems, make a new business contact, or learn about a new career path that wasn’t previously on your radar. 2. It Can Help You Learn a Language Immersion in a new city or culture is an almost surefire way to pick up a language. There are other ways to learn a language- for example, traditional classes or online-based resources like Rosetta Stone or Mango Languages- but the best, most effective way to become proficient in a new language is to put yourself in a situation in which you have to use it consistently in your day-to-day interactions. Understandably, the thought of simply dropping into a foreign country and hoping you’ll develop the language skills to survive may be intimidating. To ease the apprehension, look for opportunities that will provide a little more structure and support in your immersion experience. For example, consider taking a study-abroad class through a local university or traveling with a group that will be providing a service in the country you want to visit. But what does learning a new language have to do with your career? Consider this: The United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics projects a 46% increase in employment of interpreters and translators by 2022. That means the demand for people who can communicate in multiple languages is- and will continue to be- very high. But if you’re not specifically interested in working as a translator, language skills can still benefit your career. For example, if you can speak more than one language, you can save your company from having to hire a translator for global meetings. And, in general, as technology allows organizations to interact with others across the globe, language will become increasingly important to effectively collaborate and develop partnerships. 3. It Can Increase Your Cultural Competency One branch of a large, global corporation is located in the relatively small community (i.e., the population is about 19,000) where I live. Employees at that branch have collaborated with colleagues in Singapore, Scotland, Nigeria, Brazil, and Dubai. Many of the people who work at this company weren’t necessarily looking for an international experience when they found employment there, but they have to understand their position in a global corporation to be effective. For example, I once watched a family member return to her office at this company at 9 PM, after being home from her workday for several hours. When I asked what in the world she was doing, she explained that she’d forgotten to enter some critical data in the system, and the Nigeria team would be arriving for their workday in a few hours and needed that information to complete their part of the work. Leaving it for the next day just wasn’t an option because it impacted the processes of an entire plant overseas. Employees at the local plant also have to be mindful of customs and holidays at other locations that may impact the work schedule or their ability to reach their colleagues in those locations, as well as communicating our local holidays to their counterparts worldwide who might not know that the local office will be closed. In an increasingly globalized society, learning to accept and appreciate cultural differences is a good move for your career. You certainly don’t have to leave the country to increase your comfort when interacting with people of different races or cultures, but immersing yourself in another culture can create an unparalleled awareness and understanding of people who are different than you. With that kind of understanding, when you have to talk to a colleague in Singapore to figure out why something has gone awry with an assignment, you’ll be less stressed about the interaction and less likely to feel barriers to communication- which means you’ll be more likely to easily reach a solution. Everyone wins. Traveling abroad can be a pricey investment, but it doesn’t have to be an insurmountable barrier. Look for scholarships if you’re traveling with a class, or read travel websites and blogs to learn how to cut expenses while you’re abroad. It’s worth it: This is an investment that can change your world- and your career. Photo of person and plane courtesy of Shutterstock.

The Best Job Interview Tips How to Prepare

The Best Job Interview Tips â€" How to Prepare The Best Job Interview Tips â€" How to Prepare The Best Job Interview Tips â€" How to Prepare How to Prepare for and Nail an Interview in 6 Steps There are 6 major components to nailing an interview. We break them down into the 6 ‘Gets’: 1. Get Ready To pass the interview process, you must prepare and do research. The deeper your knowledge about the company and the role you’d be playing, the more you will impress your interviewer with incisive and pertinent questions throughout the interview. Ready Part 1: Research the company Find out when the company was founded. Is it an old company, or new, or somewhere in between? Find out what their mission statement is. It can give you a small understanding of the overall company vision and culture, and will help you to fine-tune some of your responses. Read the “about us” on the company website. It’s possible the interviewer hasn’t even read it before, so if you manage to work in some knowledge you’ve gleaned from it, you’re sure to make an impression. If the company has staff profiles online, read them. Pay close attention to the profile of the person who will be running your unit, and your potential co-workers’ profiles, too. Read online reviews about the company, if there are any. What do customers think about the company? If the company is getting good reviews, you can explain how you’ll match and exceed standards. If the company is getting bad reviews, don’t be afraid to ask why. Be prepared to explain how you can help. Has the company been in the news recently? Use Google News, type in the company’s name, and do a search. Use “Search Tools” to expand the range of your search beyond “recent.” Do a little digging and you might find some press releases from the company itself, or news stories about the company. Ideally, you can find out what the company’s goals are, particularly with relation to the job role you’d be performing. You can then explain how you could help the company forward those goals. You can use major industry research services like Hoovers to find out how many people the company employs, their annual sales, competition, top industries, without paying for the full service. What if you can’t find any information? Don’t worry, the company is likely aware that their website is either non-existent or anemic, and won’t knock you any points for not knowing about them. Use it as an opportunity to ask to learn about the company, and then make your points about how you can help. Ready Part 2: Research your role Read the hiring manager’s job description over carefully, if they wrote one. It will act as an excellent guide for what is expected of you on a daily basis, but it might not reveal the company’s overall goal. Research the specific position online. This may not work in all cases, but Quora, Yahoo Answers, and simple Google searches can offer up a wealth of information from people who have performed in the same position, or a similar one. Bonus: You can find out if the job is terrible and you should actually not even interview for it! What has the team you’re planning on joining been working on lately? Try to identify the direction they are taking, and how you’d fit in. Ready Part 3: Research and rehearse answers to common interview questions First, you’re going to need to look at common interview questions and answers. We recommend our list, as it’s comprehensive and organized, but there are many others online you can look at too. Part of answering these questions well is researching yourself and your own achievements. And that’s all for Get Ready. If that seems like a lot of work, I have a simple question: do you want a job or not? 2. Get Dressed Now that you’re ready for the interview, it’s time to get dressed. Your best bet will be to follow company culture. For smaller companies and startups, or companies you are not familiar with, you could always contact the office anonymously and ask what people tend to wear to interviews. For both men and women, previous taboos are becoming more acceptable. For instance, if you have a tattoo peeking out from under your cuff, it will likely be ignored. Just dont show off the whole sleeve. Again, that depends on the company youre applying for. All dressing and grooming advice comes with caveats, but a simple business casual outfit is likely your best bet when deciding what to wear to an interview. Overall, follow these three rules, and youll be set: Be Crisp Be Conservative Use Common Sense For Men Interview dressing habits havent changed much for men, but grooming habits are trending towards casual. Grooming Facial hair the safest course is to do a close shave. However, having extensive facial hair is definitely in and acceptable, (depending on the job!) At the very least, trim it, clean it, wax it, oil it, do what you need to do to keep it under control. Appearance:   Suit and tie  dont wear wacky colors or patterns (stick with solid navy and dark grey), you can skip the jacket if its hot out or the company is less conservative; khakis and a button down collared shirt; polished dress shoes and belt that match your suit colors. For Women The amount of choices for women can be bewildering, and as usual women live with more arbitrary rules than men. Sorry, ladies. Grooming Fresh manicure, light makeup, keep roots colored if you dye your hair. Appearance Pantsuit or dress suit with a knit top or blouse that compliments conservative coloring (navy, grey, black); pencil skirt; polished closed or open-toed shoes; heels no longer than 3 inches; handbag and belt are in good shape. If you wish to add color, include it in your accessories conservative necklace, earrings, watch, or bracelet. Again, all dressing advice has to be taken in context. For instance, you shouldnt wear open-toed shoes to a manufacturing plant. 3. Get Pumped Nerves, butterflies, jitters, whatever you want to call them, there’s now a lot of science around how to harness these feelings and use them to fire you up. I wrote an article for The Muse called 3 Sneaky Mind Tricks That Will Help You Ace the Interview  which you should read in full. However, if you want the bite size pieces for how to trick yourself into getting pumped for an interview, here they are: Trick 1: Do not try to calm down! Research from Harvard indicates that to combat the jitters, all you need to do is convince yourself that you are excited, not nervous.  By throwing a positive spin on those butterflies, you can put yourself into a better frame of mind for the interview. Trick 2:  Read about how others in your position succeeded A study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology  found that consumers of literature begin to think and behave like the protagonists they are reading about. In other words, if you read biographies about successful people and their personal career struggles and breakthroughs, you will literally begin to frame your own mindset in a similar success-minded manner, without even really trying. Trick 3: Get a grip Worrywarts, nervous  Nellies, Cassandras we have a lot of words for worriers! and its because  we all fall into the trap of being overly self-critical and anxious. The trick to combating this psychological pitfall is known as cognitive restructuring. Essentially, be aware of your self-critical habit and remind yourself that your situation isnt really as bad as you think. Use these psychological  methods to nix your worries and pump yourself up before the interview, and walk in with confidence and poise. 4. Get Smart Now you’re in the interview, and it’s time to put on the show. You’ve prepared yourself well, you’ve researched the company and you’ve rehearsed your answers to common interview questions. Bring in two copies of your resume.  The interviewers will definitely need to reference it, and youd be surprised at how unprepared interviewers can be. bringing in your resume helps lubricate the process and makes you look professional. Sit up straight.  Slouching looks unprofessional and demonstrate a lack of confidence. Shake their hand firmly.  Do not provide a dead fish, give the other person a full grip and a firm shake. Nothing is weirder than receiving a dead fish handshake. Look them in the eye when speaking.  Looking around the room and down at the table anxiously will make you come off as unprepared or worse, untrustworthy. Dont mumble.  Speak up and speak confidently. If you dont know the answer to a question, be humble and ask.  Showing genuine interest and humility will prove that youre genial and easy to work with. Provided you remain confident and well prepared, youll come off  to come off as  sharp and intelligent. 5. Get  Dirty Many people forget that the interview isn’t just for the company to learn about you, it’s also for you to learn about them. There are several pointed questions you can ask that will reveal critical details about the company and in turn help you make a smarter career decision. Dirty Question 1: What do you enjoy most about working here? What it reveals If the interviewer struggles to respond to this question, you can make a safe bet that they dont enjoy their job. Dirty Question 2: Who held the position previously, and what happened to them? What it reveals From this question, you can find out: If  previous person was fired (company turmoil?) or promoted (room for advancement!) Why they were fired or promoted how can you also succeed, or avoid the same fate? Potential obstacles you may find yourself facing, either professionally (do you have enough skills?) or from management (personality conflicts?) Dirty Question 3: Is there room for advancement? What does it take? What it reveals Find out if youre entering a dead-end job before getting stuck. Sometimes getting a dead-end job is necessary, and it can act as a stepping-stone into a better career option. The important thing is to find out before you spend too long in the job wondering when youll finally be recognized. Want other ideas on what questions to ask your interviewer? Check out our 24 Best Questions to Ask in an Interview guide, and see if your target company is right for you. 6. Get Out Congratulations, you nailed the interview and blew some minds! You’ve made it clear you’re a valuable addition to the company, so theyll be calling you in for a second interview. Finally, you’re going to have to handle salary negotiations  in the second or third  interviews. Wait! You arent done yet. Make sure you follow up after your interview! Infographic Cooks Up Steps to Culinary Success

Infographic Cooks Up Steps to Culinary Success Infographic Cooks Up Steps to Culinary Success We’re offered a plethora of information on “common” occupations. Want to be a doctor? But what about those “uncommon” careers? The ones that don’t necessarily have structured paths? Take a chef, for instance. Besides the usual Le Cordon Bleu commercials, what information do the masses have about being successful in the culinary world? Lack of Experience Leaves Half of 2012 College Grads Jobless, Underemployed

Lack of Experience Leaves Half of 2012 College Grads Jobless, Underemployed Lack of Experience Leaves Half of 2012 College Grads Jobless, Underemployed According to a study by the Associated Press, more than half, or 53 percent, of the nation’s recent college graduates are unemployed or underemployed, the highest share in 11 years. Graduates are trading their dream positions of engineers, doctors and one-day CEOs for retail, food-service and warehouse jobs. The AP reports: About 1.5 million, or 53.6 percent, of bachelors degree-holders under the age of 25 last year were jobless or underemployed, the highest share in at least 11 years. In 2000, the share was at a low of 41 percent, before the dot-com bust erased job gains for college graduates in the telecommunications and IT fields. Out of the 1.5 million who languished in the job market, about half were underemployed, an increase from the previous year. While science, education and health-related degrees are faring well, those former students holding degrees in the humanities and arts cannot say the same. Graduates are working jobs that either do not require a bachelor’s degree or do not utilize their skills or knowledge. To add insult to injury, the AP reported that the median wages for those possessing bachelors degrees are down from 2000. With the continuous increase in college tuition, massive amounts of debt and a seemingly bleak job outlook, many pre-and-post graduates are questioning whether or not a college degree is actually worth the financial investment. So, is it? As a recent graduate of the 2012 class â€"three months to be exact â€"I can honestly say that this question has become more and more complicated to answer. I know many people who have graduated from college in the past two years who fall into the “un” or “under” categories when it comes to employment. One person I know did an accelerated, but rigorous and expensive degree-program. He received a bachelor’s degree in just two years, racked up more than $40,000 in student loans and has been working in retail since he graduated. Another graduate I know couldn’t find a job with her public relations degree and ended up moving back home and working as a cashier at a local grocery store. There are numerous similar stories. Yet, I know some tales with a different ending. My fellow 2012 graduates have landed jobs at companies such as Bloomberg, CNN and Teach for America. Some got accepted into law and medical schools, others are working to start their own companies. What’s the difference? Jordan Weissmann, associate editor at The Atlantic, sums it up in his article on the unemployment crisis: It’s about the skill set. Now more than ever, degrees cannot stand on their own. They must be supported by experience. Internships, fellowships, research and volunteer work: These are the things recruiters and employers look for beyond the B.A.’s and B.S.’s.  A college degree shows a student was capable of completing demanding requirements and gained knowledge in a particular area over time. The extracurricular activities, such as internships, show how he or she demonstrated his or her understanding by practicing and perfecting the skills the individual learned while in pursuit of the degree. Degrees do still matter; they are still required for most current positions. Yet, just as importantly, college students need to focus on building the necessary skills for future job success through hands-on, practical experience.

This is why finding your passion can be bad advice

This is why finding your passion can be bad advice This is why finding your passion can be bad advice When you are at a loss at what to do with your life, you may have been given the well-intentioned advice to “just find your passion,” as if it is something you can just dig up from the ground. Now, new Stanford research explains why this can be bad advice.Paul O’Keefe, along with Stanford psychologists  Carol Dweck  and  Gregory Walton, found that the mantra of “finding your passion” implies that passion is easy to pursue and sustain. It implies that it can just be discovered, fully-formed. If you encounter any difficulty in your pursuit of passion, the problem is you.“Urging people to find their passion may lead them to put all their eggs in one basket but then to drop that basket when it becomes difficult to carry,” they cautioned in their paper.Finding your passion limits your mindset of potentialIf you believe in finding your passion, you are more likely to believe that your passions are relatively fixed and cannot be developed. People with fixed mindsets are ones t hat think that their chosen major is central to their identity. For them, science majors can only care about science and humanity majors can only care about humanities.  To test this mindset, the researchers recruited college students, a demographic that is likely to hear the “find your passion” advice. In one experiment, the students watched a popular video about black holes. Most students were fascinated, but when they were asked to read a scientific article on the same subject, the students who held a fixed mindset about interests were less open to reading it. Meanwhile, people who were open to new experiences and interests were down to read an arcane science article, even when it was outside of their wheelhouse.“A fixed theory, more than a growth theory, leads people to anticipate that a passion will provide limitless motivation and that pursuing it will not be difficult,” the authors wrote in their paper. “When this expectation is violated, a fixed theory leads to a sh arper decline in interest- as if the person comes to think that the topic was not their interest after all.”When we tell students to find their passion, we are doing it to encourage them. It means, “Do not worry so much about talent, do not bow to pressure for status or money, just find what is meaningful and interesting to you,” the researchers said. “Unfortunately, the belief system this message may engender can undermine the very development of people’s interests.” This advice backfires, in other words, when we forget to tell starry-eyed students that pursuing your passion is going to require more than just finding it - it’s going to take a lifetime of hard work, so don’t get discouraged when the going gets tough.
